Hummingbirds, How To Get Them To Your Yard
by Maxine Headd
The first time I saw a hummingbird was in Paris Tennessee. I had read many books on the subject of hummingbirds, but I had never seen one. They are beautiful tiny birds and I had never seen one in My Southern Illinois town of Marion Illinois.
I was visitiing my sister in Tennessee and we had parked our camper in her backyard for few days visit. I was outside of the camper drinking coffee early one morning when a tiny bird came and fluttered near me for a few seconds. I suppose it was wondering what I was doing there in its habitat. Its wings fluttering, it hovered there in midair like a the world's tiniest helicopter and looked at me as I looked at it. The love affair with hummingbirds had began.
I will never forget that early sighting, then I began to wonder if there were any near me. The answer of course was yes. Hummingbirds are in Southern Illinois. I began to research how to attract the little birds to my yard in my home town.
I tried using the hummingbird nectar that you can find in Wal-mart, but the birds didn't seem to be interested in that. Then one day I asked someone how to make sugar water for the little birds and if they would come to drink my natural nectar without using food coloring. They told me to make the sugar water very sweet and the birds would come. So I out a on the stove and I boiled the water and then added about 4 cups of sugar to my solution after which I stirred it to dissolve the sugar. Then I let the sugar water cool. Then I placed it into a hummingbird container and I waited. And I contrinued to wait.
Then one day my Granddaughter was over swimming in the pool and she got of the pool and laid down on her stomach to get some sun. She had on a bright yellow flowered swimsuit. As she was lying there, suddenly, a little hummingbird came down and hovered over her to check out her flowers to see if they were the real thing. We loved it.
I have not had a problem with my hummingbirds since then. I have my feeder out this year and I have already seen a hummingbird. They really are majestic little creatures and I enjoy having them in my backyard.
