Finding an Art Gallery in Cornwall

When you go to Cornwall one thing you will not be short of is art galleries. But finding a good one is difficult. I mean how many seascapes can you look at? Actually how many awful seascapes can you look at? But now there is hope with the "Jewel in the Crown".

The Drang Gallery is a new and beautiful contemporary fine art gallery in the picturesque Cornish village of Padstow. Backed by years of experience in the ever growing field of art, retail and customer service, the gallery specialises in a range of high-end Original Paintings, Fine Art Prints, Glass and Sculpture.

The gallery makes you very welcome and the staff are very knowledgeable and are prepared to go that extra yard to help you find that perfect artwork, whether for personal enjoyment or as an investment.

It offers something brand new to Padstow and is the "Jewel in the Crown" of the local art scene. Whilst I was there the centre piece of the exhibition was a two and a half metre long sculpture of a Mako shark, which stood just inside the entrance.

The carbon-fibre piece was the work of ex-Formula 1 mechanic turned contemporary artist Alastair Gibson, who constructed it from the chassis of Jenson Button's 2008 Formula One Grand Prix racing Honda.

Other artists whose work was on display at the gallery include household names such as Damien Hirst, Henry Moore and Sir Peter Blake. Prestigious artists Ilric Shetland, Michele Del Campo, Peter Brown and Adam Arbeid were also represented, along with sculpture Adam Binder, who was awarded "Wildlife Artist of the Year" 2010.

However, the most fascinating artist of them all was a guy called Anthony Amos who sadly is no longer with us having died, I believe, last year in his very early sixties. Anthony Amos was formerly a merchant seaman who became a self taught artist later in life. He depicts in his work his life at sea and memories of ships and ports. They are all done by figure and are really quite brilliant. The detail, colour and subject matter are superb. He was not a commercial artist and painted just for fun as shown by one huge piece which has a painting on the reverse canvas. At £18,000 it is worth every penny.

If you go to only one art gallery whilst on holiday in Cornwall this year then make it this one. You will not be disappointed.
