Welbeck is a village in Nottinghamshire in England. Nottinghamshire is a county in the East Midlands bordering South Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. Welbeck is located south-west of Worksop, East of Sheffield. It became a coal mining centre in 1912 and is home to Welbeck Colliery and the famous Welbeck Abbey. Welbeck Colliery has received some attention in recent years as enthusiastics attempt to piece together the history of the colliery and the men who worked within it.
Welbeck Abbey is located near Clumber Park, and was the principal abbey of the Premonstratensian order in England, and later the residence of the Dukes of Portland. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, where it was repoertedly owned by Hugh FitzBaldric. Thomas de Cuckney founded a religious house in 1140 and the abbey received many generous gifts from the likes of the Goushills, Bassets and other families of Nottinghamshire, as well as a generous grant from King Edward I.
Worksop is the largest nearby town, in the Bassetlaw district on the River Ryton at the edge of Sherwood Forest. The population of Worksop is estimated to be around forty thousand and it is twinned with Garsben in Germany.
Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College is a college in Woodhouse, Leicestershire, near Loughborough. It was originally known as Welbeck College because it was based at Welbeck Abbey. The college provides A level education for candidates entering the technical branches of British Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence civil service and privately-funded students.
But Welbeck can also be found in North America. West Grey is a township in Ontario, Canada. Located in the west of Grey County, it spans across the River Styz, the Rocky Saugeen River, the Beatty Saugeen River and the South Saugeen River. It also contains Welbeck. Ontario is a province of Canada, located in the East. It is the most populated province in Canada and second largest in area. Toronto and Ottawa are the most populated cities, with Ottawa being the capital.
Ontario is usually broken up into Northern and Southern regions, with most of the population located in the South. It's named after Lake Ontario, and the province contains around a quarter of a million freshwater lakes. West Grey was formed in 2001 when the townships of Bentinch, Glenelg and Normanby, the village of Neustady and Durham Town were joined together in a county-wide re-organisation, and contains a number of other villages and communities including Louise, Moltke and Welbeck.
