Why Collectors are So Passionate about Their Doll Houses with Furniture and Accessories

There are 3 primary reasons that people make doll house purchases.  For some it’s just a matter of buying a doll house as a gift for a child.  The second group is made up of hobbyists who enjoy the challenge of making doll houses with furniture and accessories.  And then doll house collectors make up the third group.

The focus of this article is on the collector who has no interest in doll house building and assembly except from a “who-did-it” and “how-it-was-done” perspective.  These are interesting people who, when gathered together, will talk for hours and hours on their favorite topic, doll houses and everything that goes in them.

Collectors have a passion for doll houses that is truly fascinating.  Many of them frequent doll house shows looking for interesting pieces.  They know with great detail… minutia regarding their prized collections.  Things like: where and who made the dollhouse, how it was made, and why that particular piece is unique.  Every piece has a story.

These aficionados can tell you with great certainty details about accessories like how a miniature rug was made and who made it.  They can even tell you the story behind the tiny pots and pans found in the subject kitchen or the unique material that was used for the flooring.

Sometimes they commission pieces from noted craftsmen which make for quite the attention-getter when they assemble for their confabs.  They even have their own celebrities within their circle which lends to considerable name dropping in their conversations.

For most people, looking at a doll house provides only a passing interest.  But for these serious collectors their doll houses, furniture, and accessories are highly important and provide them with indescribable enjoyment.

At first glance these people could be characterized as strange.  Some would even say that the “need to get a life.”  But that is a very unfair assessment because these people are the ones who “do” have a life.  It is the “passion” of life that gives life richness and meaning.

How are they any different from the passionate hunter, fisherman, gardener, or scrapbook enthusiast?  With all the stress and difficulty that life has to offer they have found a wonderful escape where they can find peace, harmony, camaraderie, and enjoyment.

When they gather it is like a meeting of family.  Their bond is their common interest and their shared enthusiasm is contagious.

But why?  Why are they so enthusiastic about something that most of us think is just for little girls?

When I was growing up my grandmother had something she called her “nick-nack” shelf.  On it she placed her most treasured miniature items, mostly trinkets from her travels.  I recall visiting in a home that was filled with Precious Moment dolls.  My oldest son collects steins and cuckoo clocks.  My wife loves furniture and fabric.  I have a friend who loves fine cigars.  My cousin collects rocks

Mind you, none of the aforementioned things provide any interest for me.  But I am sincerely happy for them because they have found their own individual paths to happiness and fulfillment.  They have found something that makes them feel good and gives them something to look forward to.
Collecting is about love, passion, vision, dreams, and all those things that add spice and flavor to life.

Doll house collectors, just like other collectors and hobby enthusiasts, are passionate about their doll houses with furniture and accessories because they have found something that makes life special.  They have made a connection with beauty, creativity, imagination, and something that touches them deeply in a way they need to be touched.
