When John Patitucci first picked up the electric bass at the age of ten, there was no telling what level of success he would attain in his lifetime. A superstar from the get-go, he began composing and performing just two years later, when he was twelve. This later led to academic ventures in classical bass studies, which then spurned a professional career consisting of over twelve albums to date. He is the top bassist choice for jazz greats such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Abercrombie, B.B. King, and Wayne Shorter, and continues producing his own albums on top of everything else. Even after winning a Grammy, this jazz fusion electric bass player is still going strong. With his latest album, “Remembrance,” Patitucci is well on his way to making a name for himself in the history books.

John Patitucci Trio "Remembrance"Released in 2009 with eleven total tracks, “Remembrance” redefines the way acoustic and electric basses interact. With Joe Lovano covering the clarinet and Brian Blade teaming up with Patitucci once again as drummer, “Remembrance” is an edgy, expressive album with many songs paying tribute to the jazz greats, with some of the songs dedicated to former icons. From Sonny Rollins (in “Sonny Side”) to the late Freddie Hubbard (in “Blues for Freddie”), many of Patitucci's songs are clearly inspired by his fellow musicians. Instead of replicating their tunes, however, he manages to utilize their influences on his music in his own unique way.

Other songs focus primarily on evoking emotional responses, such as the gentle “Meditations” tune with the electric bass, or the more intense “Joe Hen.” “Scenes from an Opera” calms things down a bit with the addition of the strings quartet.

Patitucci is clearly a one-of-a-kind jazz musician with a penchant for variety. Instead of a couple variations of the same tune for an entire album, Patitucci isn't afraid to mix things up in “Remembrance,” going from wild funk to slower, more sensitive tunes like in “Meditations.” Despite his tributes to the jazz greats who have influenced his work, he still maintains a strong, unique style that sets him apart from the rest. There are no doubts as to why he is the bassist of choice for so many top jazz performers. “Remembrance” shows that even after decades of composing and performing, Patitucci still hasn't lost his touch. Along with Lovano and Blade, Patitucci is a wonderful performer with a enthralling ability to compose music that will continue to entertain and inspire people for years to come.
