According to the number of selling units they have all over United States, the top 4 national coffee shop chains are Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, Tim Horton's and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. If my research is correct Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has a total of 213 locations, Tim Horton's has 292 locations, Caribou Coffee with a total of 322 locations, and of course Starbucks - are you sitting down? - with a total 8,000 U.S. locations! Wow!

This shows how gigantic Starbucks really is, especially if we take into consideration the fact that Seattle's Best, that has 160 locations in the United States, is actually a Starbuck's subsidiary. And of course, there are numerous regional retail coffee shops that did not make this list which would include such establishments as Tully's, Port City Java and Coffee Beanery to name a few.

Almost 50 years ago, 1971 to be exact, is when Starbucks first started selling coffee to hungry coffee enthusiasts. When Starbucks first opened their doors they were but a mere single coffee shop selling some darn good coffee that was freshly roasted from whole coffee beans. The location of this first Starbucks coffee shop was Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. So, what is the corporate mission of Starbucks? Here it is: to inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Over the past 45+ years Starbucks has grown to over 15,000 retail coffee shop units with locations in over 50 countries; so, if you are in need of a good cup of coffee chances are there is a Starbucks within walking distance of where you are currently residing. And of course, in order to be as large as Starbucks happens to be they need to be the world's leading roaster of premium specialty coffee - which they are!

With locations primarily located in the Midwest and eastern parts of the United States Caribou Coffee has coffee shops located in 15 states. They are certainly a key competitor to the Starbucks brand in those areas where Caribou Coffee Shops are found. A significant loyal customer base has existed for Caribou coffee for over 21 years, ever since they opened their doors in 1990. The folks at Caribou Coffee prefer not to talk about their mission as a corporation because they feel their true mission is to serve their loyal customers. Instead, they prefer to "share an extraordinary experience that feeds the soul".

With locations throughout Canada and the United States you can easily locate a Tim Horton's coffee shop near your town. Tim Horton's is somewhat different than Starbucks in that they serve donuts with their premium coffee. The company opened their doors for business back in 1964 thus making them almost 48 years old as a coffee retailer. They are primarily focused on serving their customers with top quality coffee and offering daily fresh products that satisfy their loyal customers.

With a focus on selling coffee products, premium coffee drinks and rare teas coffee bean and tea leaf is a family company that is growing and expanding to become a direct competitor with Starbucks. Due to their commitment to quality Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has been open for business for nearly 50 years, first opening their doors way back in 1963. Pretty impressive isn't it! Their success is due to their dedication to serving their community and providing a lifestyle quality experience for each patron who enters their establishments.

As coffee shops have become the new socializing "meet-up place" in today's society, Starbucks, Tim Horton's or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf will always provide the setting coupled with premium freshly brewed coffee. So when you have the need for caffeine walk down to your nearest corner and more than likely you will encounter one of these four coffee retailers. Enjoy your coffee!
