Many people driving around on the roads of Great Britain own the same type of car. Whilst owning a car does provide the person with a sense of satisfaction, it does not make the owner feel their vehicle is special or different from the all the rest. The registration number of the car however is one part which is truly unique. Thanks to the DVLA cherished transfer scheme, it is possible to really make your car stand out from every other vehicle on the road with the addition of private number plates.

The DVLA cherished transfer scheme allows British motorists to replace their existing car registrations with private number plates, providing the strict rules are carefully observed. By selecting the correct private number plates you can get the registration of your vehicle to contain the initials of your name and a number of your choice. The idea has certainly caught the imagination of drivers and car owners in Great Britain as there are now over a million private number plates on display on cars along our roads.
Government Slow to Catch On
What started out as a requirement for all vehicles to display registrations following the introduction of the Motor Car Act in 1903, has resulted in a booming industry. There are specialist cherished number plate dealers located in various parts of the country who buy and sell these sought after private number plates. Indeed, some of these specialist dealers have been in existence in one form or another since the 1960’s. The government on the other hand was a little late in joining the party. The first auction of specially selected personalised registrations on behalf of the DVLA did not take place until 1989.

Not everyone is excited by the prospect of having their name or initials proudly displayed on their car’s number plates. Some drivers wish to remain unnoticed and would rather not make a statement with their car registrations. Thankfully there are enough members of the motoring public who have the desire to stand out from the crowd which has resulted in hundreds of millions of pounds in spending money for the government. In actual fact, it is estimated that the figure may be closer to one billion pounds of additional revenue having been raised for the state, thanks to the sale of private number plates.
An Alternative View
So whilst the idea of personalising a car may not be to everyone’s liking, if you are a British tax payer you can take some comfort from the fact that the introduction private number plates has helped to reduce government debt levels. I suppose you could think of it as an additional motoring tax payable by anyone who has the desire to make sure that their car, in a unique way, is definitely seen as different to all other cars on the road.
