10 Things to Consider Before You Start a Small Business
by Helaine Iris
Path of Purpose
An assignment I often suggest to my clients is to look back and take stock of both their accomplishments and the many rich and powerful learnings of the past.
I'm proud and excited to say that I have recently completed ten year as a full time coach. I remember well the moment I gave up the security of a paycheck and struck out on my own with a dream to build a thriving practice.
I had been juggling a full time career along side a part time coaching practice. It was definitely time for me to make a bold move. I had solid training behind me and my own coach to support me in negotiating the ups and downs of a new business.
There were ups and downs - Moments when I secretly perused the classified ads for a "real" job, and fortunately, many more moments when I knew I was truly expressing my purpose. I could taste the sweet achievement and joy of creating something from my own energy and gifts.
After it was all said and done, my "taking stock" exercise proved to be quite fruitful. Here are 10 lessons learned should you decide to strike out on your own to start a business:
1. Spend equal time visualizing your perfect business and talking to lots of people. Getting inspiration and action working together.
2. Keep a steady stream of potential customers in your pipeline. Even when your business is doing well it's important to keep putting yourself out there.
3. Build a financial reserve to help you weather the ups and downs. Stress proof as much as possible.
4. Build in ample time for developing new strategies and ideas. Remember not to get consumed in just delivering services.
5. Continue to clarify exactly who your business will serve and find creative ways to communicate with them.
6. Create structures to nurture ALL the aspects of your life - spiritual, financial, relationships, environment and personal.
7. Stay inspired by connecting to a supportive network.
8. Keep the ideas rolling. Continue experimenting with different ideas and strategies until you find out what works best to keep your business thriving.
9. Focus more on creating a fulfilling life, rather than a impressive lifestyle. This more than anything else will sustain you through the ups and downs of business life.
10. Have fun...If you're not loving what you are doing, why do it?
It's YOUR life...imagine the possibilities!
