Home freshwater aquariums are great because of their health benefits and attractive appearance in your home. Provided that you keep your tank clean, there is no way a freshwater aquarium can be an ugly piece of home décor! If you are some one who enjoys a coordinated home or office, there are things to consider in order to match your aquarium to the already existing décor in the room you put it in. If you consider the following ideas, you will have a home that would make any decorator jealous.
When decorating your aquarium, consider the space you are putting it in—there are many questions to answer! Is it a home or office? What is the purpose of the room? What does the pre-existing furniture and décor in the room look like? Who occupies the room? Shapes? Colors?
In a previous article we discovered the health and psychological benefits of freshwater aquariums. Because of their soothing effect, it comes as no surprise that many doctors’ offices have an aquarium in their waiting room. If you are putting an aquarium in a waiting area of an office, a larger tank with many bright fish and plants will add a lot of life to the room and be very pleasant on the eye. If you are installing an aquarium in a business office, go for a smaller, less bright atmosphere. It will be less distracting but will still assist in relieving tension.
You can be much more creative if the tank is in your home. Consider who inhabits the room, or what the purpose is. A fishbowl in a child’s room adds fun - in this case, a Betta in a bowl will do. Putting a small aquarium in Grandma’s room will give her something to admire and enjoy. A large aquarium in your living room will entertain guests almost as much as you do! Bright colors will make it even more attractive. If you are worried about matching your home decorations, you can try fish, plants, rocks, and gravel that are variations of the same color temperature, such as pastels or reds. Consider contrast here too - if a room has a black and white theme, an aquarium full of vibrant colors might add excitement!
Shapes and themes are another consideration. Does the room the aquarium is going in have a natural or more modern look to it? If it is natural looking, go with earth tones. For aquarium décor, look at interesting coral and plants and logs for fish to play in. If modern is your look, go with fun colored gravel and plants. Add some rocks for fish to hide in between. You can also purchase interesting figurines. Placing a submarine or scuba diver in your aquarium can enhance the modern look and also make it fun! Themes can be fun and expressive. A shipwreck could add a feel of adventure to a child’s room. A space theme could be a good conversation starter!
The important things is to have fun when matching or contrasting your aquarium with your home décor. Aquariums add a water element to the feng shui of a room. Include the other elements of earth, fire and air to your room and you are sure to improve its décor. There is no way aquariums can not fit in with home décor, as they are so pleasant and will stand out more than anything. But do consider the psychological effects and pre-existing conditions of the room to make the aquarium look like it belongs and everyone entering the room will be in awe of your decorative abilities!
