11 Texas Churches Burned

by Morris Inch(7)

At various intervals since the start of the new year, 11 churches have burned in East Texas. Authorities conclude that perhaps all but one of these were the result of arson. "I can't comprehend how anyone would do the Lord's house this way," Carl Samples, pastor of the Dover Baptist Church in Carroll protested. The home of one of the men charged with at least two of the fires contained books concerning demons and atheism, as well as rifles and knives. I am reminded of antisemitism in this regard. Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin attribute it to four factors: (1) the uniqueness of their tradition keeps Jews from assimilating, (2) their determination to improve the world meets with resistence from the status quo, (3) their role as a chosen people proves to be offensive, and (4) the quality of life fostered by Judaism shames others by way of comparison ( Why the Jews?, pp. 22-23).

Granted, this is not an exact parallel. I was reminded of this recently with the Neo-Nazi demonstrations in Dresden, Germany in protest of the Allied bombings of that city during World War II. While this has been a matter of controversy over the years, it ought not to be equated with the Holocaust-as the protestors insisted.

If harboring negative feelings toward the Christian faith, one might profitably reflect on Alvin Schmidt's Under the Influence. In particular, he documents the substantial contribution Christianity has made in personal transformation, the sanctity of life, sexual morality, women's dignity and rights, charitable giving, health care, education, working conditions, science, liberty and justice, abolition of slavery, art and architecture, music, literature, and the like.

If for no other reason, church buildings provide a convenient target for aggressive outlet. A related issue concerns the extensive display of violence on television. While there is no exact correlation between what we observe and how we behave, those more susceptible may be incited to violent action. Then, too, the social tolerance of violence is increased.

Part of the reason for this is because violence as portrayed is contrived. In other words, the larger context is largely missing. For instance, we fail to see the prolonged suffering caused by some injury or demise.

"The disturbing part is it changes everyone's lifestyle," allows Neal Franklin, fire chief in Tyler, where two churches were destroyed. "Persons feel threatened and uncertain. Even as the smoke clears, it has left a cloud lingering over the communities.

"Let us arm ourselves with the weapon of prayer," urges one observer. Whereupon, we will "see the glory of God being revealed." This appears in keeping with Jesus' injunction, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matt. 5:44). (cf. my publication website: http://www.ourchurch.com/member/p/publications)

Morris, I live in east Texas. Your article is appreciated. As I understand from our local news, three younger men are in custody as I write this. So far, no reasons are given by their actions.

There are many incomprehensible things going on in this world today. I think we should all pray on a daily basis for the healing of our great country. Good article Morris.

I am reminded of the observation, "While God does not need America, America needs God." Thank you for your comment.

God bless,

Morris
