A Letter of Love to My Son

Now that you are old enough to understand some things that you could not understand when you were younger, I thought you might appreciate this letter.

You see, when you were little, I provided for all your needs, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you were sick, I was there to care for you and nurse you back to health, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you were hungry, I fed you, even when it meant that I might not be able to eat, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you dirtied your diapers, I changed you, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you were dirty, I bathed you, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you were in need of clothes, I would buy your clothes, even when it meant going without clothes for myself, not because I had to but because I loved you.

When you were learning to read, I read books to you, not because I had to read, but because I loved you.

When you were afraid, I would comfort you, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you were sad, I would cheer you up, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

When you wanted to play, I played with you, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

And I know you may not understand this, but when you were bad I scolded you, not because I had to, but because I loved you.

You see, my son, love is a choice and not a right or obligation. When you needed love, I loved you. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to.

I wanted to love you because you were God's gift to me.

I wanted to love you because you were flesh of my flesh.

I wanted to love you because you were beautiful and innocent and helpless.

I wanted to love you, just to love you, for who you were.

Through the years, my love for you has never diminished. It has not faded, or weakened. or faltered. My love for you has grown. Even if I don't show you that I love you in the same way I did when you were young.

So, know this my son... No matter where you go, no matter what you do, I will always love you. Not because of what you do for me. Not because of what I have to do for you. I will love you because I want to love you... for YOU. I'll always love you.

Thank you Fran,

This was a letter two all three of my sons. Now they are all grown and out of the house, I can see how much they really taught me.

Blessings,

Michelle

Thank you Anon,

This is actually written for all three of my sons. They are all grown and out of the house now, but they know that mom is just a phone call away. Then the visits are really special.

Blessings,

Michelle

You're right Robert,

It is heartwarming to love my sons and for them to love me too. We have had our difficult times, yet through it all, we are all still close.

Blessings,

Michelle
