Growing a Tree
With growing awareness of the environment, many people are now becoming ecofriendly in the home and at work. Another way to re-vitalize the earth is to erect trees. Growing tree has a lot of benefits. Not only do trees improve the landscape, they provide shade, screen and are home for many insects and animal species. In the urban environment, trees can help reduce noise from road traffic, serve as windbreakers and shelter the home from unsightly views. Depending on the tree, some may also produce flowers and edible fruit. There is no question that trees markedly improve aesthetics of the environment.
However, before selecting a tree one should know a few things of practical interest. Tree planning is a long term commitment. Most trees grow slow and the benefits are not seen immediately. Once a large tree has been planted, it is difficult to move it to another location if it has not been planted in the proper place the first time. Depending on where you plant the tree, you may get shade or obstruct a pleasant view.
Most homes do not have space for many trees. So try and select only one or two at the most unless the landscape is large. Moreover, the tree selected should be chosen so that it will grow in the soil and available light near the home. Trees do vary in their requirements for light, shade, soil and moisture conditions. So know these beforehand.
For the average home owner who has never grown a tree, it is best to talk to a nursery owner or a landscaper before planting a tree. Others who are knowledgeable about trees include arborist, farmers and decorators. Knowledgeable professionals can help you make the most of your tree and help meet the requirements that you want. More over there is ample information on cyberspace about growing trees in the home.
Once the tree is selected, preparations will be needed prior to planting. The area needs to be cleared of vegetations and the soil has to be prepared. Most nurseries do provide you with instructions on how to plant a tree. With proper planning, one can achieve success with any type of tree.
What most people forget is that once a tree is planted, there is work to be done. The initial baby plants do need care and protection. The tree needs to be fed, watered, pruned and guarded against small animals until it is healthy, strong and can grow independently. Once a tree is mature, it does not need to be fertilized or watered because the roots have developed and can sustain the tree.
If for any reason, you have question about a tree, talk to a nursery. One of the sites that offers online advice is
