Health Insurance and its Social Implications

Health Insurance has been at the forefront of news stations, newspapers, local discussions and individual minds ever since Healthcare Reform came onto the table. It has created a media buzz that has not only thrown the nation into a political frenzy, but has actually boosted sales of individual health insurance plans due to the realization that self-purchased insurance can be as affordable as group policies. With many unemployed, the nation is in a tizzy and the need for non-group health insurance has also increased.

There are many social implications that follow this wave of interest in the debate. Foremost is that people are now thinking about their health and healthcare as something that needs to be secured not only for their physical well being but for financial security. The news constantly reports about those who have gone bankrupt or lost their jobs due to ineffective or lack of health insurance. Some are left destitute and bankrupt after simple operations that created complications requiring procedures with costs numbering in the thousands of dollars. With this in mind, the nation is looking at healthcare in a totally different light and trying to insure that their lives do not face exponentially worsening catastrophe as those have who decided to go without health insurance.

People have also become anxious. The desire for Healthcare Reform is great. those that are waiting it out have no way to know when they will be able to apply or qualify for the Public Option or whatever other amalgamation it turns into. People become nervous listening to our President Obama, the House and Senate make promises with no deadlines, write documents with no clear answers, and incite debate where there does not need to be any. The country is in a semi-state of paranoia. Companies are worried that the Public Option and healthcare reform will destroy the health insurance industry, and those who cannot afford healthcare, COBRA, or find a job for group insurance are hoping that they don't get seriously ill or injured before they can find coverage.

One of the biggest implications about health insurance reform as a whole is the tendency for the country to believe they will be receiving "free" healthcare. This country was founded on a desire to succeed, the more that we, as Americans, receive entitlements the less we are likely to produce quality work for ourselves, and especially others. The constitution gives us many rights, most of which are immaterial rights. The right to free speech, the right to "bear" arms, among others. No where does it say we are entitled to health insurance which is the payment based on risk for healthcare services. When we start to entitle physical, material goods and services we run the risk of turning into a country that we are not. Entitlement changes society as a whole, the mentality of the people begins to change.
