Ain't No Party Like a Eco Friendly Party

Sure, you try to live in eco-friendly life. But when 50+ people are in your house, you don't have time to worry about which cups are going in the recycling bin and buying biodegradable decorations. It's the fall; Halloween, football season, and Thanksgiving don't really leave you with that much time to be an eco-friendly person. You need something fast and in a hurry, so you go for the stuff in the party store that's better and cheaper. Stop right there! You CAN have an eco-friendly party and eat your cake too. And you won't have to go out of your way to save the earth. When you're having a bash, follow these tips:
1. Invitations and Thank You Cards: You can use the internet to send out your invitations and thank you notes instead of using paper. Some people might think that e-cards are the lame or lazy way, but e-cards have come a long way. Sometimes they even look better than your regular paper invitations and you can personalize using cool graphics. You think this costs a bundle don't you? It's FREE. That's right, free. There are several sites that let you make free e-cards and send them to up to 100 people. If you still want to have that personal touch with your own handwriting and stamp make sure that the paper you use is recycled and is recyclable. Like old magazines that can give it extra pizzazz.
2. Let Nature Decorate: That autumn wreath that costs $39.99 online is really just 20 minutes in your backyard searching for sticks and leaves plus the $2 you need to buy twine. Grab a bag and take a walk around your block. You should find plenty of pine cones, seed pods, and twigs. When using flowers or leaves flatten them and place them in a book. Close the book, stack other heavy books on top and don't open it for two weeks. Once you take them out, they will be preserved and will last a lot longer. When buying your Indian corn, wheat stalks or your pumpkins go to the local farmer's market to save cash. Apples, berries, mini pumpkins, and nuts make great table decorations plus a tasty treat! Soy Candles can make your event spooky or homey. They add extra glow and are better for the environment than petroleum candles. If you store these decorations in airtight bags once you're done they can last for years.
3. A Little Spoon here: Most of the waste from your party will probably come from utensils, paper and cups. You can use biodegradable or bio plastic utensils. These can be washed and used again or if thrown away will decompose without harming the planet. You can find biodegradable cups as well or get the recycled cups. If you would like to recycle, your utensils place another bag next to the trash with a clear sign telling your guest to recycle utensils there. Most will be happy to oblige! When picking party bags try to pick the recycled one instead. Let your kids decorate the bags themselves or try your hand at artwork. This definitely adds a personal touch with the gifts your guests take home.
4. Something Good to Eat: You do not have to have high fructose corn syrup treats this year. Ginger snaps are a good treat to have when the turkey isn't done yet or those trick-or-treaters want something sweet but the parents want something healthy. There are also many candy companies now who make organic candy. A surf on the web can tell you the nearest place to get organic lollipops. You might also try looking for candy whose proceeds go to a worthy charity. For the adults there is organic beer. Don't forget the fruits and veggies at your next party! This may be a little easier to give to the adults rather than the kids. But for those of us who say "yuk" when we see healthy food there are plenty of recipes for cookies and cakes that have a secret ingredient of things like broccoli, carrots, and spinach. The reason it's a secret; because you can't taste the healthy stuff!
