Five Steps to a Healthy Refrigerator
by
Karl Clark(3)
Ensuring your refrigerator is clean and stores only in-date food or food that you will actually eat soon and not waste products is the first step to keeping a clean kitchen. People often believe that because food is in the refrigerator it can stay there forever without going off, this is so untrue. It only takes one viewing of any of the TV chef stars like Ramsey's Nightmares to see how even commercial restaurants can this wrong.
Not only will having a clean fridge make you feel better about yourself it will also help the environment. Chilling food that will inevitably end in the trash is wasting energy, energy that may have been created by environmentally damaging technologies. Also by having a regular clean out of your refrigerator it should never become crammed, making the refrigeration unit work harder to keep the inside cool, again using more energy.
So not only will a healthy looking refrigerator keep you and your family healthy but it will reduce the environmental impact you have on the environment. Simply do these five steps once a week, shouldn't be take more than an hour and help yourself, your family and the environment.
Step 1: Take everything out of the refrigerator including the shelves and wipe the inside walls, floor and roof of the chiller cabinet with a soft cloth or sponge and some warm soapy water. Dry the inside with a soft towel and leave the refrigerator door open help it dry.
Step 2: Discard any food that looks old or wilted, smells funny or is passed its expired date. If you store food in plastic Tupperware tubs make sure you open everyone and check its contents, if you're unsure of what it is - bin it!Step
3: Clean the shelves with warn soapy water and a soft cloth and sponge and dry well. Once dry put the shelves back in the chiller cabinet in an order that suits your food groups. How you should organize the shelves in your fridge is not something anyone can tell you to how to do, it will depend on the foods you buy and store.
Step 4: Return your food to the refrigerator in an order that suits your life style. In some cases were food goes is obvious like your butter and cheese items will go in the butter compartment often on the door, fruits will go into a bin on the bottom of the refrigerator with vegetables in the another bin. It goes without saying that raw foods should be kept separate from cooked ones, but you should always try and keep perishable goods within eye sight and as soon as it shows signs of going off get rid of it.
Step 5: To have a fresh smell each time you open your refrigerator door take a lemon and cut it into quarters and place it in an open container at the back of the fridge. This should last a week providing a wonderful lemon smell each time you go to the fridge.
That's it, nothing too complicated or technical to maintaining a healthy clean and fresh smelling refrigerator. The only thing left to say is make sure you do this on a regular basis and you will have a beautiful fridge.
