Becoming a top actor takes a lot of time and dedication and is not for the faint hearted, there can be so many ups and downs on the path to glory and many budding stars give up before they ever taste success. So I just wanted to say before we begin our rundown of top acting advice that if you're really serious about making it in this business, it may take a good many years.
Big Time or Small Fry
So what's it going to be? A bit part in the local town hall play or a shot at the Oscars? This is the critical decision that has to be made right at the start of your career. The road to success is very different for each path and you need to have your end game in mind right at the start.
Go where the action is...
If you do want to play with the big boys your going to need to go where the big boys live. What this means is that if you want to be the next Hugh Grant or Rene Zellweger there is no way you can stay locked away in a small village all your life. You're going to have to move where the people are, to the major cities such as London or LA.
Use a website like www.Gumtree.com to find some cheap digs while you're poor and looking for work.
Need some cash?
Find a friend that has some home recording studio equipment and ask them to help you out in making a vocal demo. This short home recording can be used to get voice over work which helps paying the rent while the real acting work is scarce. (As it often is!)
Lots of people these days have a home recording system using the built in programs on an iMac. This setup can also do video so you could make an acting demo while you're at it.
Practice makes perfect, get a mirror
Most young actors start out believing that there is nothing they need to learn at all. But the fact is that a few simple acting lessons right at the start of your journey can make all the difference down the road.
Just a few short years ago acting lessons where by far the biggest money suck for any beginner, but if I was starting all over again on a budget I think the best place for lessons is www.expertvillage.com and then spend a great deal of time in front of your bathroom mirror!
Get an Agent
Now that you have mastered your craft its time to get a top class agent to represent you in the big bad acting universe. I'm not going to lie, there are about a million to choose from and a few that I would not trust with a barge pole. The best advice I can give you is to pick someone who looks after a well known actor you admire. Chances are that if they've had success with others, you fame and fortune is not out of the question.
P.S Never give up, The Beatles played for 10.000 hours in Hamburg before ever tasting the big time. Anything worth doing is never based on luck.
