Why Should You Have A Roommate?

by Richard Jones
Recession Rentals

No matter who you are, doubtless your expenses have risen drastically during the past year. You are most probably living in a rented space, since buying a house or flat is out of the question at the moment. If you are a university student, you are much more likely to be sharing your student accommodation with several roommates. If you're not, then it's time to rethink this and give up some rooms to rent from your house or flat. This is because there are several advantages to be gained from getting yourself a roommate or two.

Financial Savings : a roommate is a person who will not only share the monthly rent with you, but share the expenses on food, household products and utility bills. Since property rentals have increased by about 4% and everything else has skyrocketed in prices recently, the best way to beat the rising living expenses is to rent accommodation and find a flatmate.

Shared Chores : no one enjoys sweeping, dusting and cleaning an entire house or flat by themselves. When you find a housemate, all the daily chores are shared and doing stuff together will be a good relationship builder as well. Life is made easier and both of you will have time for other activities when the workload is shared.

Companionship : you can say goodbye to the boring and silent open space when you find a flatmate. An empty flat can give you the creeps sometimes and it's not easy to live in isolation. By offering your flat's rooms to rent, you can find one or many roommates who fit your lifestyle. Your roommates become your built-in support group over time, creating a long-term friendship.

Added Security : in a time when the economy is falling and crime is rising, safety and security are among the top concerns of everyone. When you find a housemate according to your preferences, you have added security, both in terms of beating loneliness and fear.

Diversity : if you are more adventurous, you can use a roommate finder service to locate foreign exchange students or new immigrants to share your flat and learn new cultures and languages. While it's a more daring aspect of finding a roommate, it's certainly worth your time and effort. Offering cheap rooms to rent will definitely gain the attention of people who are new to the country or area, allowing you to find a great roommate with less hassle.

While all of the above are definite benefits, it's important to clarify matters about personal space, entertaining friends and guests, cost sharing arrangements, taking turns with cooking and cleaning etc. Problems with roommates are common if you don't do a thorough roommate search before choosing someone to share your household. A written and signed agreement stating all the clauses, terms and conditions will ensure you and your roommate have a good long-term relationship. You can use a free roommate search facility available online to find the perfect person for you.

In conclusion, finding a roommate is a practical solution in today's world where everything is gradually becoming too costly for the average person.

Hi Richard- good tips. When I went to college very few could afford their own space or would consider running up student loans to have one. My adult son bought a house and rents out rooms to his friends. Very smart.
