Book Review: The Book Thief

This novel is narrated by Death, and as its set in 1939 in Nazi Germany, Death has never been busier.

Liesel is a 9 year old girl living with a foster family as her parents have been taken away to a Nazi concentration camp. Leisel likes to read books. Books she shouldn't be reading. Books she can't get without stealing them. Leisel is a book thief.

This is the beautifully written story of Leisel and the inhabitants of her street when the bombs begin to fall. It is both gripping and touching, keeping you up late at night as you can't bear to put it down.

The family and the few they hide in the cellar share their story through Death, so you are swept away with them.

This book is inventively written and well deserving of its place as an international bestseller. You are hooked from the beginning with Death's small fact: 'You are going to die' all the way to the tear-jerking end.
