Additionally The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports, "Australians generated approximately 32.4 million tonnes of solid waste or approximately 1,629 kilograms of waste per person in 2002-03."
What this means is that we need to change our habits, be less wasteful and smarter with our money. If we all make small changes we can make a difference to the environment and our economic situation.
Here are some simple money saving tips and will help the environment too!
1. Drink tap water. Stop buying bottled water which costs money and is bad for the environment. According to Choice magazine, Australians spend around $385 million a year on bottled water. Choice says, " ….vast amounts of greenhouse gases are generated from manufacturing the PET bottles, bottling the water, transporting it and refrigerating it……….Most water bottles end up in landfill or as litter – only 35% get recycled."
Tap water is free and perfectly good in most areas. Fill up a reusable bottle of tap water, and put a squeeze of lemon in it if you don't like the taste and start saving money.
2. Say NO plastic bags. Bring your own reusable shopping bags to the supermarket in place of being given plastic bags.
3. Turn off the lights. Install energy-efficient bulbs and turn off the lights whenever you leave a room.
4. Buy Energy Star appliances. High star rated appliances use the least amount of energy which will save you money on power bills and significantly help the environment. The more Stars the more the appliance will cost but you will save back the money in a little time.
5. Change electricity or gas service providers to a cheaper supplier and save a lot of money.
In isolation one tip may not seem very big, but applying a number of tips can save you $100's of dollars a year.
