Internet entrepreneurs are constantly looking for ways to drive targeted traffic to their site. Many have a limited budget and are unable to put up the kind of money that the big boys do so they are heavily reliant on search engine ranking and referrals.
Here are a couple ideas that we have found helpful and with a little time and effort will at least get you some exposure that may otherwise go unnoticed.
MSN Groups
MSN is highly recognized by most internet users. Within their website is a Groups and Chat feature. If you have a website with a specific expertise or focus you may want to consider joining some groups that cater to what you offer. Each of the Groups have a few features you may want to explore.
First is the message board. If you have something that may be interesting to members of a particular group you will want to post a message. It's a good idea to use html with links and pictures of what you have to offer. Join as many groups as fit your website and post on a daily basis. The more you post, the more members will get to know and eventually visit your site. Use all of the salesmanship and powers of persuasion that you have.
Second is the Pictures Folder offered by most groups. Make sure that you put a picture in the folder and then you can add pictures with links to specific products and items on your site if you use html.
Third - a lot of groups offer you the opportunity to post links to your site and add your banner. Definitely take advantage of this feature. If you need some free banner ads you can go to http://addesigner.com/ .
Fourth - Start you own group. This is probably the best way to get exactly the audience you are looking for. You can then build your group according to your own specifications. As an example I have provided the link to one of my sites for you to review.
MySpace
Currently MySpace has over 27 million members. This is obviously a place where you should be able to find someone interested in what you have to sell. I have provided some tips on what to do once you join MySpace. Please note, some features are unavailable until you have been a member for at least a week, but for the most part you will be able to get started immediately.
First - Carefully select your username. This site has many different types of members with a variety of reasons for being there so you will want to focus your username on what you want them to know about you. If you want to be personal, use your name or if you want to keep it business focused use your site name.
Second - Build your profile. Since this where members will go to learn about you be as attractive as possible to the audience you are seeking. I personally use my picture, but you may want to use your company logo. Use HTML to build your About Me section. You can insert hyperlinks, graphics etc. I would caution you not to get too fancy by over using streaming audio and video because it slows down your page and discourages visitors with a slow connection. Be creative because you have a number of options that are open to your own creativity.
Third - Check out the Groups and join all the ones that suit your interests. There you can post messages and even use HTML to insert hyperlinks.
Fourth - Build up you friends list. Use your own judgment on how best to do this.
Fifth - Use the blogs and bulletins feature to send messages to your friends and members of groups.
Sixth - After a week you will be able to post classified ads, but it is a good idea to get familiar with what other people are posting.
Personally, I think this is a very good opportunity to meet people and get your message out and best of all it's free.
